Do you think it's OK for kids to be latchkey kids? At what age is this practice acceptable? What do you think about older siblings watching younger ones?

I used to stay with my younger brother at 11. I have an 11-year-old and I don't think I'd leave him home alone other than maybe to go across the street for a minute.

I'm with you, Yvette. Is it just me, or does it seem less safe to leave kids that age home alone than it did when we were younger? I stayed alone at 10-11, but I wouldn't leave mine for more than a few minutes.

My experience is just the opposite. I was rarely left alone before I was 12. However, with communications being as good as they are these days, if a child knows how to contact his/her parents by phone, there shouldn't be a problem. Children learn to become independent by doing things on their own.

I started leaving my child at home alone when he was 12 years old. He is mature enough to take care of himself and know when things go wrong. I don’t leave him for nothing; I also provided him a safety service that can surely protect him even if I am out and not on his side. I registered him to SafeKidZone for his safety and protection in times of trouble. It has a mobile security application that enables my son to summon help from family and friends and with access to the nearest 911 when safety issues arise.
