Mutts Matter: Happy Hanny

Meet Hanny, a fun-loving, active American Bulldog who needs a family to love.

The moment you see Hanny, you can’t help but smile. He’s a goofy, happy dog who greets you with warm enthusiasm and loves every person he meets.  Hanny is a young, strong, and active American Bulldog who is around 3 years old and weighs in at a muscular 70lbs. He’s a handsome boy too, with a perfect snow white coat and striking blue eyes. His favorite things in life are being with his people, playing tug and fetch, and American cheese.

Mutts Matter originally rescued Hanny when he was just a pup. He was adopted by a local family, and lived with another small dog and several young kids who adored him.  We thought we’d found him a family who would love and commit to him forever, but that turned out not to be the case for poor Hanny. His family is going through a divorce, and instead of stepping up to continue to take care of this wonderful pup, both parents decided to take the easy way out. Because Mutts Matter commits to all of our rescue dogs for life, they returned him to our care, and he now has a second chance to find his forever family.

When Hanny came back into the rescue, it was clear he was coming out of a stressful environment. He was very thin, depressed from losing his family, and fearful of sudden movements and loud noises. But, after a few short weeks in his new foster home, he has blossomed into a happy, healthy, fun-loving dog. He’s gotten back to a healthy weight, and his charming bulldog personality has captured the hearts of his foster family.

Hanny lives with his foster mom, Jasmine, and her daughter, Sabrina, where he gets lots of love and attention. He also gets at least two good walks a day, goes running a few times a week, and Jasmine has been working with him to improve his leash walking skills and teach him basic commands.

Jasmine describes Hanny as “a total people dog who just wants to be loved and be near you.” He sleeps right next to her bed, or lies by her feet when she’s watching TV, and follows her everywhere.  He’s quickly become part of the family, and even accompanies Jasmine on weekend road trips to see his foster brother, Yannick, at college.

Hanny does great on social outings meeting new people, and he adores kids, but he’s choosy about his canine pals. He’s never going to be a dog park dog, and can be reactive on leash to some dogs if they bark at him or come too close before he’s ready. Jasmine has been working with him and knows how to read his body language and address the situation before he reacts. He’s been doing much better on his walks, but will need a capable and committed owner to continue his training, keep him focused, and make sure he gets daily exercise.

Our hope for Hanny is that he finds a loving family who will truly commit to him and make him special part of their lives. He’s a sweet, loving pup who is great with kids and will make an excellent companion or family dog. He would do well as an only dog or in a home with a smaller or female dog, and a fenced yard to run and play fetch in would be ideal.

Hanny is allergic to foods or treats with fish in them. Eating products with fish or fishmeal will cause his skin to break out, so he must stay on foods that are only meat based.
