The Running Mom

Finding time to exercise as a mom can be a challenge. Running with my son allows me to stay healthy and spend time with my favorite little man!

I love my son and I love running; however, running with my son is something I've had to grow to love. It's not easy to find the time to exercise as a mom of a busy toddler, but running is something that is important to me so I have found ways to make it work.

When I was pregnant, I was given a top-of-the-line jogging stroller as a baby shower gift by my family. I was so excited about the thought of running with my baby. My first run with Zain was anything but the perfect image I had in my mind of running blissfully through the neighborhood pushing the stroller with ease.  It felt like torture and I didn't understand how anyone could do it and look so effortless.

I stuck with it because if I wanted to run, I had to bring the baby.  It got easier each time and now it's nothing for me to take Zain for a 3- or 4-mile run.  Okay, that's a lie.  It's still hard.  It has gotten easier, but it takes much more effort than running alone.

A little over a month ago, I got to thinking about running resources while on a run with Zain.  Most of my favorite magazines or websites about running are geared to the average runner who runs alone.  Their tips and support didn't necessarily apply to a mom who does most of her runs with a kid in tow.

I mulled over the idea of starting a blog/website where I could offer advice and support for running moms and after some discussion with my wonderful and supportive husband, The Running Mom was born.  It is still a work in progress, but I've gotten such great feedback so far.  I love that I'm helping to inspire other moms who want to run.  I'm not an expert and I'm certainly not the best runner out there, but that doesn't mean I can't help other running moms.

I ran the Baltimore Half Marathon and the Marine Corps Marathon in 2006, long before becoming a mom.  I'm currently training for the MD Half Marathon in a couple weeks right here in Howard County, and I also plan on doing the Baltimore Marathon in October.

My son is my running partner for most of my training runs, and although he won't be able to join me for my races, pushing him in the stroller is making me stronger physically and mentally so I know I'll be ready on race day.
