Ball to Run for Third Term on County Council

District 2 County Council member Calvin Ball said he thought about running for higher office, but decided to run for the Council again to continue to work on local issues important to him and his community.

Howard County Council member Calvin Ball (D-District 2) announced Wednesday he plans to run for a third term on the County Council in the 2014 election.

Ball, a Columbia resident and Catonsville native, has represented District 2, which includes Long Reach and Oakland Mills as well as parts of Elkridge, Ellicott City and Jessup since being appointed to the position in April of 2006.

Since then Ball, 38, has been re-elected twice, winning 60 percent of the vote in 2006 and 68 percent in 2010.

"I thought it was a great opportunity to continue serving our community and working on the issues that are important," said Ball about his decision to run for a third term.

Ball said he had considered other offices, but chose to stay at the Council to work on local issues such as education, community policing and environmental sustainability.

If Ball is re-elected, it will be his last term on the County Council due to term limits prohibiting an individual from serving more than three terms.

“It’s been truly an honor to serve our community as I’ve worked in collaboration with fellow constituents and colleagues to resolve outstanding concerns and bring positive change to our neighborhoods," said Ball, in a statement. "I’m humbled by the support I’ve received over the years and the countless emails of encouragement and inspiration."

Prior to entering politics, Ball worked as a Howard County firefighter and EMT. Since 1998, he has taught in the Community College Leadership Doctoral Program at Morgan State University.
