What You Think: Wearing Red, White and Blue on 9/11

Do you think it's appropriate to wear red, white and blue on 9/11?

We’ve published many stories about the anniversary of 9/11 this weekend, but one in particular struck a chord with Columbia residents. Columnist wrote about how her children were asked to wear red, white and blue to school the Friday before the anniversary, something she didn’t believe was appropriate.

Patti Caplan, spokeswoman for the Howard County school system, said the schools asked children to wear those colors to show patriotism. Here’s what you thought:

"Wearing red, white, and blue does not mean simply 'July 4th.' They show our pride. They show that we are proud of our country. They show that we are a united people, and that we will not be intimidated. Wearing them shows WHO WE ARE. We are not celebrating the date. We are celebrating our oneness. I find this totally absurd, and I am one that chose not to watch all of the television coverage over the weekend."

"I don't think I would have made my kids to do it either. Why not wear red/white/blue for V-day? Or VJ-Day? Or December 7th"

"Well we all wore red, white and blue for weeks after 9-11 happened. It's patriotic, not just for holidays. The flag is not only for happy occasions."

"Absolutely! We need to show our solidarity as a nation against those who would harm us."

"I just don't think what you wear is the point. It should be a time of remembrance, reflection. Some use it as a day of service."
