Tropical Storm Debby Damages Florida, Points North

The fourth named Atlantic storm in 2012 makes Debby the earliest-in-season to reach that distinction.

Tropical Storm Debby unleashed tornados and flooding across northern and central Florida over the weekend and forecasters are beginning to predict a northeastern path for a storm that has spurred warnings from Alabama to Georgia.

According to The Weather Channel, Debby has set a record for being the earliest fourth named Atlantic storm, "leapfrogging Dennis from July 5, 2005," according to weather.com.

"In an average year, the 4th named storm would have occurred by Aug. 23. So, in terms of named storm counts, we're roughly two months ahead of the pace," the website reported. "That said, there is no correlation between a fast start to the season and the degree of activity of the rest of the season."
