Why Go:  There will be a walking tour of the Oakland estate from the Vantage Point neighborhood to Wilde Lake, a U.S. Army Field Band concert in the Oakland Ballroom, demonstrations of dances popular in the early 1800s and more.

Why Go: The family-oriented event is hosted by the and honors Hispanic Heritage Month. It also aims to promote the Columbia Association’s Welcome Initiative—a program that helps residents learn about and become more involved in their community. This year’s event features include music, activities, entertainment and free food, as well as the annual salsa dance competition judged by Marielle Pabon of That’s Dancing studio. This year there will also be a new children’s crafts table and Zumba demonstration.

Why Go: The 1990s are alive and well in Columbia! Who can forget the greatest alternative rock station from that era? HFS is back with its yearly festival, featuring local favorites Clutch, as well as the Gin Blossoms, Dr. Dog and others.

Where/When: Patapsco Valley State Park Hilton Area at 1100 Hilton Ave. in Catonsville on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Why Go: Have you ever watched Bear Grylls and wanted to learn more about how to survive in the wild? This class will teach you the basics of what you need to know: how to build a shelter, light a fire and more. (Advance registration is required.)

Why Go: Fall is just around the corner! Celebrate Oktoberfest just a few weeks early and sample some seasonal brews. Also featured: German wines!

Ellicott City:

Where/When: Howard County Fairgrounds at 210 Fairground Rd. in West Friendship on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Why Go: For gun collectors or for those in the market for a new firearm, there will be over 400 tables at this gun show. Holsters, sights and other merchandise will also be available for purchase.

Pricing: Adults: $8, seniors (62 years old and older): $6; children (12 years old and younger): free

Where/When: on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Why Go: Matt Klos is exhibiting his work at the gallery and this is the opening reception! You will have a chance to meet the artist (who also lives in the Baltimore area) and view his stunning works of art.
