Today in Columbia: Humorous Turf Field Compromise Offered

Turf fields approved; mistletoe missing in action; still time to enter 'Deck the House.'

The Weather:

"Partly sunny, with a high near 48. Northwest wind between 13 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 33. North wind between 3 and 6 mph." — The National Weather Service

There's been a lot of chatter about the Board of Education's artificial turf proposal on the howardpubliced listserv.

While most people agree that the turf fields are a good idea, the opposition seems to be centered around how capital project needs were prioritized by the board, not by the idea of the fields themselves.

Opponents are concerned that structural problems, like leaking roofs, are taking a back seat to luxury items like athletic fields.

A recent tongue-in-cheek comment offered a compromise: "Artificial turf fields on the roofs?"

Deck the House:

Time is winding down for you to enter your house in Patch's Deck the House contest.

By now, your house is ready for its Christmas (or other winter holiday) closeup!

Patch is holding a national house decoration contest, and we need pictures of your house all dressed up for a winter holiday.

Columbia now has two entries — thanks, Michele Dimity — but I'm sure there are more than two decorated houses in this town!

Get the details and find out what you have to do to enter your house.

Here's some incentive — the grand prize winner's school district will win $100,000.

Question of the Day:

We posted a link yesterday to a New York Times article about the nationwide  shortage of mistletoe, caused largely by the severe drought that struck Texas.

Do you normally buy mistletoe at Christmastime? If so, did you have trouble finding it this year?
