Things To Know For Labor Day

Read below for a list of closings and things to be aware of locally this Labor Day weekend.

Labor Day is just around the corner. We've compiled a list of closings and other tidbits to watch out for in Howard County.

  • All Howard County Library branches will be closed Sun.-Mon., Sept. 4-5
  • The Howard County government offices and courts will be closed Mon., Sept. 5
  • The Howard County animal shelter and landfill will be closed Mon., Sept. 5
  • There will be no trash, recycling or yard waste collection Mon., Sept. 5. The collection the following week will be based on the county’s  “slide” schedule. Trash collection, recycling and yard waste will “slide” to Tuesday, Sept. 6. Tuesday collections will “slide to Wednesday; Wednesday collections will “slide” to Thursday, etc.
  • Parking regulations and fees will be in effect on Monday, Sept. 5.
  • On Mon., Sept. 5, Howard Transit’s Brown, Green, Orange, Red, Silver and Yellow routes will operate on a Sunday schedule, while the Gold and Purple routes will not be in operation.  In addition, Connect-A-Ride Rtes J and K will operate on a Sunday schedule, while routes A, B, C, E, F, G and H will not be in operation.
  • The 9-1-1 Center, Police and Fire Departments will remain staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  For emergencies, call 9-1-1.  For non-emergencies, call 410-313-2200.
  • During Labor Day weekend, Howard County police will be on the lookout for intoxicated drivers. The Howard County Police Department (HCPD) will establish DUI patrols as part of what it calls “an intensive crackdown on impaired driving” spearheaded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. On nights and weekends, HCPD said it will be especially vigilant, since alcohol is more common in crashes during these times.
  • The local YMCA sites will have shortened Labor Day Labor Day hours; area Y facilities will only be open from 5:30 a.m.-12 p.m. Mon., Sept. 5
  • For information on Labor Day sales going on at The Mall in Columbia, visit the site's Facebook page.
