The question spilled out over Facebook, Patch and other sites over the Memorial Day weekend.
Has Memorial Day lost its meaning?
The question has taken a few manifestations.
A picture of a woman lying at the foot of a gravestone has been circulating the web with the caption “Memorial Day. In case you thought it was National Barbeque Day.”
And commenters under a recipes underscored the message as well.
“Memorial Day is a day to reflect and remember those who sacrificed life, limb and mind to ensure the freedom we have today,” wrote . “It is not about sales, trips to the beach and barbeques. It is fine to enjoy the above as long as you acknowledge those who sacrificed so that you can.”
