Should you avoid politics on Thanksgiving? Or bring it on?

I know someone who once almost ruined a holiday dinner by telling her in-laws a George Bush joke.

Did I mention the in-laws were Republicans, from Texas?

At my own extended family’s Thanksgiving meals, I’ve noticed that it’s best not to utter the words “gay marriage” in mixed company.

But freewheeling conversations about the environment, foreign policy and how we treat those less fortunate than ourselves? Those are fair game, and most of the time the range of opinions is fascinating, leaving me with more than just my turkey dinner to digest for awhile.
