Monday's 5 Things: Stabbing Trial, CA's Future, Weather

Five things for Monday, August 20.

 

1. Stabbing Trial - Xavier Travon Bates, 19, of Columbia, was ruled competent to stand trial for first- and second-degree murder after he was of Christian Lendell Hall, 17, of Columbia, in July of 2011, according to Explore Howard. Bates' psychiatrist withdrew his opinion that Bates had a severe mental disorder after "reviewing collateral sources," according to the article.

2. Featured Blog Post - Miss Zippy wrote a post about her experience at the Columbia Iron Girl Triathlon, which took place at Centennial Park on Sunday morning. She writes, "Triathlon, in my opinion, all comes down to the bike. It takes the hugest chunk of time, so it pays to make it the focus of your training if you’re going to do triathlons."

3. Phil Nelson on Columbia Association's Future - After talking about an in his remarks about future improvements to the Columbia Association, Phil Nelson, CA president, said in response to questions from Patch, "What we need to think about more is that CA has always provided programming for the very young to the very old. Nothing is going to change in that ideology. We're still going to provide programs for all people, because that's what CA does." A full article on the interview will be published later today.

4. Weather - It's not so hot, or so muggy out there anymore. It's actually pretty nice, here's the forecast - "A chance of showers between 11am and 2pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 76," according to the National Weather Service.

5. Top National Story - A Republican candidate for Senate in Missouri said women are unlikely to get pregnant from rape because "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down." Sen. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) won a three-way primary on Aug. 7 to take on Claire McCaskill for her Senate seat, according to the Huffington Post.
