International Day Saturday Canceled

Due to excessive heat, the Lakefront event celebrating Columbia's 44th birthday is off.

International Day, the event scheduled for Saturday at the Lakefront to celebrate diversity and Columbia’s 44th birthday, has been cancelled due to excessive heat forecasts.

According to the National Weather Service, the heat index could reach as high as 111 Saturday. Today (Friday), it could reach as high as 117.

A heat warning has been issued for Columbia and the region until 10 p.m. Friday night, and remains in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.

There is also a Code Red Air quality alert in effect Friday, which means air pollution concentrations in the region are unhealthy for the general population. Outdoor exercise is discouraged.

Howard County libraries and senior centers are available if anyone needs a place to cool down.

The entertainment scheduled Saturday as part of International Day from 6 to 10 p.m. will still be held at the Downtown Columbia Lakefront.

Also, the Decorated Umbrella Exhibition has been rescheduled for the evening of Friday, August 12, along with that evening’s lakefront movie, Tangled.

The music schedule is:

6 p.m. Jah Works (reggae with Jamaican roots and hip hop)

7:30 p.m. Daniel Rego Duo (Portuguese guitarist duo)

8-10 p.m. The Rollex Band (classic rock and R&B)
