Howard County Groups Talk Blogs, Local News

Experts in one of the nation's most wired communities will share tips and discuss context in terms of connecting the past with the present in media coverage.

Howard County has established itself as a leader and trendsetter in many realms, and the county's leadership and enthusiasm in the use of new media is another recent example of local residents blazing a new trail. Its strong use of new media and its vibrant online community have earned the county accolades as one of the areas in the country.

Several local organizations are celebrating that vibrant and well-followed online community with events this week and next that are open to the public:

Milestones and More Hoco Blogs party Monday, Oct. 10  

Stanford Grill in Columbia  5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

New media journalists will gather to help celebrate the fifth year of the Tale of Two Cities blog as well as the 50th episode of "And Then There's That …", podcast.

The 50th episode will be shot during this gathering, with guests of HoCo Rising and Lindsey McPherson of Explore Howard.

Guests at the party could find themselves on the show as well. Organizers plan to mill about with microphone in hand, chatting with folks helping the group celebrate these milestones.

As part of its celebration of American Archives Month, Columbia Archives will host a discussion featuring local media voices at 7 p.m. Oct. 12, at the headquarters, 10221 Wincopin Circle.

Lisa Rossi, associate regional editor with Patch.com; Lisa Kawata, freelance feature writer; Duane St. Clair, HoCo Connect; and David Greisman, Columbia Flier and Howard County Times, will discuss the challenges, opportunities and importance of context in getting out the news in today's world of instant messaging and sound bites.

• The Association of Community Services will bring together members of new and traditional media outlets at its free general meeting from noon to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 19.

ACS has invited to the event bloggers, podcasters, reporters and editors from online and traditional print news daily, weekly and monthly news organizations who publish Howard County news.

They will discuss what they want and how and when they want it, in terms of news content.

Confirmed participants include Andy Rosen, Baltimore Sun news content editor; Business Monthly Editor Becky Mangus; Elkridge Patch Editor Elizabeth Janney; Coale, of Hoco Rising; and Maryland Reporter Editor Len Lazarick.

The meeting will be held at the , 7246 Cradlerock Way.
