Republican National Convention kicks off, Hurricane Isaac makes landfall, a rancorous school board debate, weather.

 

1. What I'm Working On Today - It's good to be back in Howard County. After a weeklong vacation to Wisconsin (I just missed catching a muskie, although I caught a lot of sun), I'm back at the helm of the Columbia Patch. Today, I'm looking into a debate between a former school board candidate and a current school board candidate that became testy recently on an online forum. Marshallow Man, the author of 53 Beers on Tap blog, posted the debate.

2. Republican National Convention Kicks Off - The Republican National Convention started in earnest on Tuesday night with speeches from Ann Romney and Chris Christie. The New Yorker described Romney's speech as, "Simple, direct, touching—everything Mitt isn’t" and referred to Christie's as "the speech of a blowhard rather than a visionary, but the audience inside the hall liked it." The New York Times editorial board teed off on the start of the convention in an article published this morning, "It was a day late, but the Republicans’ parade of truth-twisting, distortions and plain falsehoods arrived on the podium of their national convention on Tuesday."

3. Hurricane Isaac Hits the Gulf Coast - The category 1 hurricane made landfall on Tuesday night and is belting the southern gulf coast region, including the city of New Orleans, with rain. Al Roker was there this morning and had to hold on to his interview subject to avoid falling down in the approximately 75 mph winds. The good news is this storm is much weaker than Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the region seven years ago today.

4. Weather - mostly sunny with a high of 84, according to weather.com.

5. Police Say Bullying Not a Factor in Perry Hall Shooting - Police in Perry Hall said yesterday they could not confirm that bullying was a factor in the shooting that left one Perry Hill High student critically injured on the first day of classes on Monday. "[The shooter's] conversations with investigators have not indicated bullying was an issue in this case," said a police spokesperson, according to .
