Featured Health Tip: Eat Cucumbers

These water-based veggies can fill you up while making your skin look great.

For years women have been relaxing with cucumber slices on their eyes when being pampered at spas, but to really get the beauty benefits of cucumbers, ditch the slices on your eyes and bite into a cucumber instead.

“Cucumbers are full of water and vitamin C, so they have great anti-swelling properties that can reduce water retention and promote a healthy complexion”, says Caitlin Dout, RD, LDN at

In addition to being great for your skin, cucumbers are also great for your waistline. This popular salad topper is practically all water, which means you’ll fill up faster without filling out your jeans. An entire cucumber will cost you less than 50 calories in your daily count according to the USDA.

How to choose: The most important thing to consider when choosing a cucumber is the firmness. Cucumbers have a short shelf life of about a week, so you want to look for the firmest cucumbers when shopping to ensure that after a few days your cucumber will still be fresh in the refrigerator not in the trash can.

Enjoy it: Most people have heard of or tried some type of cucumber salad, but try adding a little protein for an even healthier snack. Take you normal mix of cucumber slices, thinly sliced onions, vinegar and extra virgin olive oil and mix with one small can of chunk light tuna. Once mixed, add your desired spices and wrap in a large outer leaf of Romaine lettuce for a refreshing summer lunch.
