BGE Warns Of Possible Power Outages Due to Storms

Isolated tornadoes are also possible in central Maryland region.

Baltimore Gas and Electric Company officials are warning of possible power outages Wednesday resulting from strong storms forecast for central Maryland in the afternoon.

These storms have the potential for lightning and wind gusts approaching 50 miles per hour, according to BGE, which could damage overhead and underground electric distribution equipment, causing interruptions in electric service.

Isolated tornadoes are also possible, according to the National Weather Service.

The utility company continues to restore electric service to customers following overnight thunderstorms and expects service to the vast majority of remaining customers to be restored Wednesday afternoon, according to a press release. Service to nearly 13,000 customers has already been restored.

According to BGE, all customers should keep the following items readily available to help ensure the safety of their families and property during electric service interruptions:

  • Flashlights, not candles
  • Fresh batteries
  • Battery-operated clock radio
  • Corded telephone
  • Fully-charged cell phone
  • Non-perishable foods
  • Blankets

BGE also advised customers in a press release to consider filling the fuel tanks of their vehicles, in the event a power outage affects service to neighborhood gas stations. For customers who rely on well water, BGE also "strongly encouraged" filling a bathtub with water in advance of severe weather.
