Report: Developers Present Initial Plans for $125 Million Apartment Complex Near Mall

The apartment and retail project is similar to the Metropolitan Downtown already under construction near the Mall in Columbia.

Developers presented the initial plans for a $125 million mixed-use apartment complex at a pre-submission community meeting at Howard Community College Tuesday night.

According to an Explore Howard report, the building will be 30,000 square feet of retail space with 437 apartments situated next to the Metropolitan Downtown project, which began construction in February.

The five-acre parcel where the building is planned to be built is located across from Sears at the Mall in Columbia and bordered by Mall Ring Road and Broken Land Parkway.

Similar in nature to the Metropolitan, the new development will contain two buildings, wrapped around a parking garage, according to the report.

The pre-submission meeting was the first step for the developers—Kettler and Howard Hughes—to passing the 16-step Downtown Columbia approval process. Kettler officials said they hope to begin construction on the project in 2015, with a plan to finish in 2017, wrote Explore Howard.
