Hungry? Drink Some Water

Is it hunger or is it dehydration? Studies have shown that many people mistake thirst for hunger. Don't get lured into eating. Figure out your signal.

This week's health tip comes from the first homework I gave to our 90-Day Challenge folks.  Many of them have reported that this was helpful.

Every time you feel hungry, not counting when you're due for a meal, I want you to drink at least one large glass of water. Wait 20 minutes. If you are still hungry, then you can choose a smart snack.

You may be shocked by how many times simply getting hydrated turns your hunger pang off. That means your feeling of hunger might have nothing to do with hunger.  In fact, there have been studies doing this exact task, and what they found is that many people have their hunger/thirst sensor mixed up.

(No, that's not the way a scientist would explain it. There's no hunger/thirst button, but you get the point.)

But this task is simple, and if you take it seriously, I'd find it interesting to hear how often drinking water took away your hunger. Try it for a week and leave me a comment about how this went.

And of course, if you are still hungry, by all means eat.  We can go into healthy snacking later, but in short, I'd stress that a smart snack is one that includes protein and carbs, such as almond butter and apple, hummus and veggies, etc.
