Romney Leads Two New Polls in Florida

Two new polls out in Florida show Romney slightly ahead of Newt Gingrich in the state of Florida.

The Republican primary in Florida is now only six days away and more polls are coming out showing where the race stands in Florida.

A We Ask America poll yesterday showed Mitt Romney ahead of Newt Gingrich by two percentage points.

PRESIDENT - FLORIDA - GOP PRIMARY (WAA)
Mitt Romney 36%
Newt Gingrich 34%
Rick Santorum 13%
Ron Paul 10%

I think even the pollsters were a little surprised by this if you read the article associated with this poll.  This poll was done January 23rd among 946 likely primary voters with a margin of error (MOE) of +/-3.19%.

This morning, we have a new poll from Quinnipiac University that also shows Mitt Romney ahead by two percentage points.

PRESIDENT - FLORIDA - GOP PRIMARY (Quinnipiac)
Mitt Romney 34%
Newt Gingrich 32%
Rick Santorum 9%
Ron Paul 8%

This poll was done January 19-23 among 601 likely primary voters with a margin of error of +/-4%.  The one caveat to these numbers is that among the 254 votes surveyed before the South Carolina primary, Romney led 37%-26% (MOE +/-6.2%).  For the 354 voters surveyed after the SC primary, Gingrich actually led 40%-34% (MOE +/-5.3%).  What that shows is a lot of Republican voters will change their mind just to follow who they perceive the winner to be.

I think we have only begun to see the polls.  I still expect to see polling from American Research Group, Mason Dixon,  Suffolk University, and many others who have polled Florida in the past well before Tuesday.
