New Poll On Same-Sex Marriage

New poll in Maryland shows a small plurality of voters oppose same-sex marriage in Maryland.

With Primary Election Day in Maryland less than a week away and the Republican Party race still being contested, we may be blessed with a number of polls in the next few days that could give us a good look at how Maryland feels on a number of issues.  I already know of one Maryland resident who was polled by Rasmussen Reports today and in addition, Public Policy Polling has indicated on their Twitter feed that they will be taking a poll this weekend in Maryland.  For the presidential race, my expectation is Mitt Romney will have a healthy lead over the Republican field and if they decide to poll the General Election as well, Barack Obama will be well ahead of all the Republican candidates.

What I am hoping to get from some of these polls is a look at the question that will be the most closely watched ballot question in the state of Maryland - Same-Sex Marriage.  This evening, there was a release of a new poll from the polling organization OpinionWorks that is being reported in many local media sources showing how evenly divided this issue is  if this issue does get placed on the ballot, as is expected, through referendum.

According to the media sources reporting on the poll, the breakdown of support and opposition is as follows:

  • 43% oppose same-sex marriage being legal
  • 40% support same-sex marriage being legal

It still somewhat surprises me that in a state as skewed liberal as Maryland,  same-sex marriage seems to be an issue that remains evenly divided.

I haven't been able to find the raw data of the poll or exactly how the question was asked, but these results seem to mirror most of the other recent polls that have asked about this issue.  I did looking at some of these other polls.

According to the media sources reporting on this poll, this poll was done March 16-19 among 601 registered voters in Maryland.

Here is The Washington Post's take on this poll.  This article highlights that opponents of same-sex marriage are much more intense in their feelings than those who support same-sex marriage.

Here is The Baltimore Sun's take on this poll.  The article gives a good breakdown on the regional support and opposition to same-sex marriage.
