Volunteers needed for 2014 Columbia BikeAbout on Sept. 13

Volunteers are needed for Columbia Association’s (CA) annual Columbia BikeAbout, a free event being held this year on Saturday, Sept. 13, organized by CA and the Columbia Archives.

The volunteers will assist with traffic control and directions and to act as guides along the 12-mile route. Flexible shifts are available between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Training — and a free T-shirt — will be provided for those volunteering to help.

BikeAbout is a popular event that attracts several hundred bicylists each year. The route takes advantage of Columbia’s extensive path system and highlights Columbia’s historic and natural beauty. This year’s route, which will start and end at Wilde Lake Park, will take riders on a winding route through sections of Wilde Lake, Harper’s Choice, Hickory Ridge and Town Center.

Features on the BikeAbout will include the history and ongoing development of Wilde Lake Village Center, Harper’s Choice Village Center, Hobbit’s Glen and Symphony Woods. And to continue the celebration of the centenary of Jim Rouse’s birth, there will be a stop in Rouse’s former neighborhood. In partnership with Wilde Lake Community Association, volunteers and riders will be able to take part in the annual Wilde Lake Old-Fashioned Family Picnic, featuring entertainment, games, and a variety of food trucks selling fare for hungry riders.

For more information on volunteering, please email Columbia.Archives@ColumbiaAssociation.org or call Jeannette Lichtenwalner at 410-715-6781.

Among the materials available is the extensive James Rouse Collection, which chronicles Rouse’s long career that influenced urban and suburban development in the United States and around the world. It is rich with correspondence, speeches, photographs and memorabilia. The collection is open the public for research.
