Third public meeting on April 23 about study analyzing the future of Columbia's village centers

Members of the public are invited to an upcoming meeting regarding the “Columbia Market Analysis and Economic Development Services” study. This is the third of four public meetings — an additional meeting was added to allow for more community interaction and education.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bain Center, which is located at 5470 Ruth Keeton Way in the Harper’s Choice Village Center. Registration is encouraged but not required via columbiamarketstudy3.eventbrite.com.

On April 23, the consultants will discuss their market findings and what type of developments and offerings could be supported by the marketplace in Columbia’s village centers and the GE-Dobbin Road-Snowden River Parkway corridors.

The fourth and final public meeting, when the consultants will discuss their recommendations, will be held on Thursday, May 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. on the fourth floor of the Rouse Company Foundation Student Services Hall at Howard Community College.

This study is a collaborative effort between Columbia Association (CA), the Howard County Economic Development Authority and the Howard County Department of Planning and Zoning. It is evaluating current and projected demand for development in Columbia’s village centers, and will help us understand the relationship of the centers to other competing commercial areas.

The study is part of a continued focus on the village centers. In 2009, the Howard County Council adopted new regulations to promote the revitalization of Columbia’s village centers. During the recent update of Howard County’s General Plan (PlanHoward 2030), CA worked with the county to include a recommendation in the plan for a village center market study.
