See Exhibit on Columbia's Founding at This Year's Howard County Fair

Columbia Archives will be exhibiting “Creating Columbia: The Idea and The Gamble” at the Howard County Fair on Aug. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., as part of Hands on History Day at the fair, located in the 4-H Activities air-conditioned building.

The exhibit traces the very beginning of Howard County’s “New Town,” exploring Jim Rouse’s vision, what Howard County looked like in 1960, and the story of the first land purchases that led to the assemblage of 14,000 acres that became Columbia.

Hands on History Day at the Howard County Fair brings together organizations that celebrate and preserve the history of Howard County, including the Weavers Guild of Greater Baltimore, Historic Ellicott City Inc., Preservation Howard County, Chesapeake Region Lace Guild, Howard County Historical Society, Friends of the Patapsco Female Institute Inc., B & O Railroad Museum: Ellicott City Station, Friends of Whipps Cemetery, Maryland National Road Association, Howard County Living Farm Heritage Museum, Howard County Recreation and Parks Heritage Sites and Preservation and Conservation Programs, Coalition to Protect Maryland Burial Sites, and Benjamin Banneker Historical Park and Museum.

Columbia Archives, a service of Columbia Association (CA), collects and preserves the history of Columbia and makes it available to the public. Among the materials in the collection that relate to this exhibit are aerial photographs of the land from before and during the initial development, correspondence, maps, the 1960 Howard County General Plan, newspaper clippings and a check register recording the land sale payments. Columbia Archives is located in the American City Building, 10227 Wincopin Circle in Columbia Town Center. Hours are normally Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Summer hours may differ.
