Community Foundation of Howard County Grants $295,403 to Howard County Nonprofits
The Community Foundation of Howard County, which raises, manages and distributes funds to support Howard County nonprofits, gave $295,403 in grants to 48 nonprofit organizations in Howard County. Grants come from the foundation’s community grant program, which combines operational and project requests into one funding cycle.
“This year’s grantees presented compelling, innovative proposals designed to tackle evolving and expanded human-service and educational challenges as well as to expand the reach of arts and cultural programs,” said Beverly White-Seals, president and CEO of the Community Foundation of Howard County. “The strength of CFHoCo is the variety and depth of ways that we are able to link the generosity of our donors with organizations to benefit the entire Howard County community.”
Health & Human Services Grants
The 22 human services grants total $174,003. The human services grants support organizations that address critical concerns of the community, including family issues, health care and housing.
Adaptive Living – $3,000 supporting a residential and support program for Howard County residents with physical, developmental and/or cognitive disabilities
American Heart Association – $6,300 supporting the Howard Has Hearts program that trains 400 community members on how to administer hands-on CPR
American Red Cross Chesapeake Region – $9,600 supporting the Howard County Emergency Services program in which trained Red Cross volunteers are dispatched following natural disasters to provide aftercare and support families and individuals impacted by the event
AT:LAST, Inc. – $7,500 supporting access to assistive technology for individuals with disabilities and those who have limitations as a result of aging in order to increase, maintain or regain their functional capabilities
Best Buddies Maryland – $5,500 supporting a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities
Bridges to Housing Stability – $10,000 supporting housing and homelessness prevention programs in Howard County
Camp Attaway – $9,600 supporting a summer therapeutic program to nurture the mind, body and spirit of children who are at risk because of an inability to manage their emotions and behaviors
Community Action Council – $11,500 supporting a volunteer coordinator position that will assist the council as it aims to increase awareness of and responsiveness to the needs of Howard County’s low-income population
FISH of Howard County – $9,600 supporting assistance for Howard County residents with evictions, utility cut-offs, prescriptions and the provision of food delivered to their homes
Friends of the Patapsco Valley State Park – $6,603 supporting the Hollofield Playspace, a spacious and safe outdoor play environment that will be fully accessible for all community members
Gilchrist Hospice Care – $9,600 supporting end-of-life care provided at Gilchrist’s Howard County Inpatient Center
Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center – $13,500 supporting programs including walk-in counseling, crisis services, shelter programs and day resource center
HopeWorks (formerly the Domestic Violence Center of Howard County) – $12,000 supporting services including counseling, education, shelter and abuser intervention
Howard County Autism Society – $10,800 supporting advocacy, information and support for individuals on the autism spectrum, their families and their communities
Living in Recovery – $3,000 supporting the Women’s Recovery House, a private residential treatment home for women in Howard County
Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland – $10,000 supporting the home-delivered meals program in Howard County
Moveable Feast – $3,500 supporting the Howard County Home Delivered Meals program
NAMI Howard County – $5,000 supporting outreach, education and support programs for Howard County individuals and families living with mental illness
National Family Resiliency Center – $9,400 supporting clinical services and educational programs to help children and adults preserve a sense of family, foster healthy relationships and constructively adjust to change
Neighbor Ride – $8,600 supporting the organization’s supplemental transportation services for seniors in Howard County
St. John Baptist Church Mentoring Program – $4,400 supporting a mentoring program to enhance moral development, improve academic performance and school attendance, build self-confidence and inspire positive behavior in African-American youth
Voices for Children – $5,000 supporting efforts to address the needs of abused and neglected children represented in the Howard County court system
Arts and Culture Grants
The arts and culture grants total $69,300 to 15 nonprofit organizations.
B&O Railroad Museum: Ellicott City Station – $4,900 supporting the educational programs and museum exhibits at the Ellicott City Station museum that preserve the physical legacy and experience of American railroading
Candlelight Concert Society – $10,000 supporting stimulating chamber music ensemble and soloist performances in Howard County
Chesapeake Shakespeare Company – $2,100 supporting the free Shakespeare for Kids summer program, which introduces children to stage performances of Shakespeare at no cost to the family
Columbia Bands – $2,200 supporting free concerts and programs in Howard County that facilitate musical expression of adult amateur musicians as well as musical experiences for local, national and international audiences
Columbia Center for Theatrical Arts – $5,200 supporting theatrical arts productions and services provided in Howard County that inspire thought, action, creativity and change
Columbia Festival of the Arts – $12,300 supporting its annual events and performances that build community through shared participation and celebration, engage participants in a broad spectrum of art forms and cultures, and encourage interaction among artists and audiences
Columbia Orchestra – $10,000 supporting its concerts and programs that foster lifelong appreciation of, enthusiasm for, and participation in music
Columbia Pro Cantare – $2,400 supporting its concert season that provides enriching, creative and diverse musical experiences for both singers and listeners
Howard County Arts Council – $4,100 supporting arts programming, facility management, arts advocacy and outreach programs
Howard County Concert Orchestra (formerly the Orchestra of St. John's) – $3,500 supporting classical music performances for residents of Howard County and the surrounding region
Howard County Poetry & Literature Society (HoCoPoLitSo) – $4,600 supporting programs and events including writer-in-residence, live literary events, Shakespeare, and writer-to-writer television programs that promote excellence in literary arts
Kinetics Dance Theatre – $2,100 supporting dance training and outreach programs dedicated to the development and presentation of contemporary dance
Little Patuxent Review – $1,200 supporting the publication of a journal, salon series and outreach programs that reflect and draw upon the creativity and diversity of Howard County and the region
Sundays at Three – $1,000 supporting its 17th concert season offering public performances of chamber music
Young Audiences of Maryland – $3,700 supporting arts programs, professional development opportunities and a teaching art institute to benefit Howard County schools
Education and Community Affairs Grants
The 11 education and community affairs grants total $52,100.
A-OK Mentoring–Tutoring – $2,000 supporting mentoring and tutoring services to enhance the successful development of academics, behaviors, self-image and social skills in Howard County public school students
Bright Minds Foundation – $7,400 supporting programs and services that address equity and equality and access to educational offerings
Columbia Delta Foundation – $6,500 supporting the first annual Delta Scholars Conference that will provide workshops focused on leadership, self-esteem, conflict resolution, debriefing of the year’s activities, community project round up and other topics aimed at qualified female students in grades 10 to 12
Conexiones – $3,500 supporting programs to advance the leadership capabilities and educational achievements of Hispanic students in Howard County
Cradlerock Children’s Center – $3,000 supporting English Immersion and Preschool for Children of Immigrant Families programs
Ellicott City Historic District Partnership – $4,000 supporting a newly established town manager position to assist in the partnership’s advocacy efforts for improvement and revitalization of historic Ellicott City
HC DrugFree – $7,400 supporting educational programs and drug/alcohol prevention services for parents, youth, educators and the community
Howard County Foundation for Black Educational and Cultural Achievement – $1,700 supporting scholarships for Howard County African-American high school graduates who plan to pursue post-secondary education or training
Junior Achievement of Central Maryland – $6,500 supporting JA Finance Park Virtual that teaches Howard County middle-grade students about financial responsibility through virtual lessons on how to develop and live within a balanced personal budget
Lazarus Foundation – $5,000 supporting computer technology access to Howard County nonprofit organizations and individuals
makingCHANGE – $5,100 supporting financial education to Howard County residents living below self-sufficiency
The Community Foundation of Howard County, founded in 1969 as The Columbia Foundation, has awarded more than $13 million in grants to Howard County nonprofit organizations delivering human service, arts and cultural, educational and civic programs.
