Columbia, (Aug 1, 2013) – Girls on the Run of Central Maryland (GOTRCM) is pleased to announce that Kathy Barnett has joined the organization as its new Executive Director.

“After a careful and thorough search, we are pleased to welcome Kathy to the organization, ” said Becky Ramsing, GOTR Central MD Board President. “Kathy’s enthusiasm for the Girls on the Run mission to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident is matched only by her extensive community involvement and experience raising awareness and empowering young girls in Central Maryland. Kathy joins our talented staff in continuing the growth and success of the organization. Kathy’s expertise comes at a key moment for Girls on the Run Central Maryland as we move our organization forward, and continue our rapid growth rate throughout Howard and Carroll counties. We could not be more pleased to have Kathy on our team,”

Current GOTRCM staff, Susan Michel, Director of Operations, will continue her dedicated focus on coaches, volunteers and girls, ensuring a positive and impactful experience for all participants and successful delivery of the overall program. Lisa Martin, Founder of Girls on the Run of Central MD, will continue her role of Community Outreach and Marketing.  Kathy will compliment these roles by focusing on strategic planning, building donor relationships and optimizing financial performance.

Kathy has an MS in Applied Behavioral Science from John Hopkins University and a BA in Government & Politics from the University of Maryland, College Park.  She recently completed her sixth season of coaching Girls on the Run in Howard County and is also an avid runner and triathlete. Kathy grew up in both Howard and Carroll counties and has spent the past 20 years working with people, organizations and communities doing strategic planning, organizational development and raising awareness around issues related to women and girls.  “Girls on the Run has had a huge impact on our community and the girls we serve. I am excited to be joining this remarkable team and look forward to the exciting plans we have for the future,” Barnett said. In addition to her love and passion for health & fitness, Kathy also serves as a member of the Women’s Giving Circle of Howard County’s Advisory Board and is Chair of the Youth Development Committee, which advises the Young Women’s Giving Circle of Howard County and facilitates the WGC’s Journey summer camp program. Kathy and her husband live in Howard County with their three active children ages 15, 9 and 5.

About Girls on the Run

Girls on the Run (GOTR) is an international, physical activity based positive youth development program that prepares girls 3rd though 8th grade run 3.1 miles and educates them about healthy physical and emotional lifestyles. The program empowers girls at an early age to prevent the display of future at-risk behaviors, giving girls greater self-confidence, a stronger sense of identity, a healthier body image, and a better sense of community. The spring and fall programs are administered at more than 40 public and private elementary and middle schools in Howard and Carroll counties.
