Will Wegmans Be Able to Sell Beer and Wine?

HowChow wants to know. Patch got the answer.

Howard County’s most popular food blogger—HowChow--posted an important question Thursday morning:

“Will the Wegmans sell liquor in Columbia?” wrote the blogger, who has not revealed his or her name.

HowChow points to rumors swirling on the Facebook fan page for Columbia Wegmans that libations might be for sale in the high-end grocery store that some people are very excited to see come to Columbia. The opening date has been designated as June 17.

(A location is scheduled for Owings Mills as well,

“Anyone know?” HowChow wrote. “Anyone know how to search liquor licenses in Howard County?”

We don’t mean to gloat, HowChow, but we do.

The answer resides with Denise King, the administrator at the Board of License Commissioners.

“Wegmans has not applied for a liquor license, nor can they,” she wrote in an email to Patch Thursday morning. “They are considered a chain store, and Howard County does not allow chain stores to hold liquor licenses.”

Another fine example of government over-reach, courtesy of local government ibeciles. Thanks, JERKS.

In NJ, Wegman's has a third party opperate the liquor portion of the store. Why can a chain restaraunt have a liquor license, but not a chain store?

How was the 7-11 on Frederick Road near St. Johns Lane exempted from the "No Chain Stores" rule? They sell beer, soft alcoholic drinks, and wine.

I thought there was a state regulation that alcohol only could be sold in state-approved distributors' locations... I wish Trader Joe's, Costco, and Safeway could sell liquor too! In other places they often have a wide variety and great prices. I think they should all get to compete.l

I was once told that only ONE store in a chain can sell beer/wine in the county.
