Wegmans Reveals Use for Upstairs Space

The space that was proposed for a liquor store will have a new function.

The 10,000 square foot space on the second floor of the Columbia Wegmans will be used for various educational and cooking classes, according to a Wegmans spokesperson.

The in-store events will be scheduled until Wegmans can figure out a permanent use for the large space on the second floor that was originally intended for a liquor store, according to the spokesperson.

A large event calendar was posted just outside the second floor space that adjoins the Market Cafe last week.

Recently announced events include a partnership between Wegmans and St. Agnes Hospital. The free series, which is focused on fostering health and wellness in the county, will be held on the second Monday of each month, from 6 - 7:30 p.m., October through June.

The Howard County Alcoholic Beverage Board unanimously voted against granting a liquor license to the potential owners of the proposed liquor store in July after they concluded it violated a ban on chain stores selling alcohol in Maryland and there wasn't a demonstrated need in the area.

Liquor store would have been better but that's a great use of the space. Looks like they have good classes.

I was hoping for cooking classes so I am glad to hear this.

Sounds like a great use of the space. I really have no respect for the A/B board at this point, and am resolutely sticking with my plan to boycott Perfect Pour, Kings Contrivance, and the other cronies involved in the vote, but I'm looking forward to seeing the classes at some point.

I think some kind of very small restaurant up there, serving alcohol (licence to serve, not sell), using Wegman's products would be wonderful. It's very intimate and could be used in conjunction with a shopping trip if you wanted to go "out" to eat afterward!

I dont think people need to consume alcohol before or after grocery shopping.... In reference to the alcohol serving restaurant mentioned in the comments. Lets go get sh*tfaced at wegmans and then go shopping. Yep, sounds beneficial. And just b/c you personally wouldnt get sh*tfaced, doesnt mean others wont. I prefer not to shop around people who have been drinking.... I myself like alcohol, but there are appropriate times and places to consume it. As for the huge liquor store upstairs.... Thats like saying you cant have a walmart in town b/c there'll be too much competition.

That's a laughable argument, seriously. Who said anything about allowing people to consume alcohol on the premises?
