Style and Inspiration at Ellicott City's GoGo Guru

The new historic Main Street boutique sells yoga apparel and more.

Hillary Brich says yoga has changed her life. So much so, “I quit my job.”

She took up the practice for many reasons - health problems, physical ailments, "Midlife stuff" - but her devotion persisted and grew. She left the world of IT and in November, Brich opened GoGo Guru at 8289 Main Street.

The store manages to pull off "funky" and "serene" at the same time, offering a unique assortment of yoga apparel, as well as jewelry and gift items from Durance, a line of essential oils and other aromatheraoy products.

She also has her own line of yoga apparel.

“With yoga clothes,” Brich said, "You either shop at designer stores or you shop at Target. There’s really nothing in between.” At the designer stores, you pay an arm and a leg and at the discount stores, the quality just isn't there, she said.

Brich has been practicing yoga for four years and she currently teaches a class at Body Space in Columbia.

At GoGo Guru, Brich sells clothes with particular practices – hot yoga, hatha yoga, etc. – and different body shapes in mind, too.

Slender, athletic and 6-feet-tall, even Brich said she has problems buying clothes that fit.

“I want to cater to the whole community,” she said. The store carries clothes from XS to XXXL.

And GoGo Guru works with vendors who also try to serve the larger commuity. "We only work with designers with social and/or environmental commitments," Brich said. "That can mean everything from being U.S.-made, or that a donation is made with every purchase, or that every step in the manufacturing process is organic."

The first month of business has been good, the Ellicott City resident said. “It’s been mostly word of mouth and people who happen upon us because they’re walking down Main Street.”

Yoga has helped her overcome some physical ailments, she said, and even helped her avoid surgery. Now she has a chance to help others find their way – comfortably – to yoga.

“I want to be a resource to the community.”
