Speak Out: What Establishments Would You Recommend for New Mall Addition?

At a meeting on Tuesday a representative of the mall developers said they would aggressively pursue retailers the community was interested in, if they could afford the market rates.

The plan to demolish the L.L. Bean store at the Mall in Columbia and is now in full swing.

Officials from General Growth Properties outlined plans on Tuesday night that showed what the new addition would like—it would consist of three buildings with a large courtyard in the middle. To fill the new space, GGP is currently  negotiating with several retailers who GGP senior development director Jim Whitcome said, "had tremendous interest" in the new development.

Whitcome also said that if residents would like to see a certain store be included in the new development, they should contact the mall's management and "we'll go aggressively at them."

"We're generally driven by what the market wants," said Whitcome. "We actively pursue any top quality merchant."

The mall already includes over 150 restaurants and stores. The full directory is listed on the mall's website.

Some Patch readers have already weighed in on the Columbia Patch Facebook Page, one recommended a Crate and Barrel, another person said CVS and a couple people said more parking (even though Whitcome made it clear on Tuesday that additional parking was not included in the current plan.)

So with the plan calling for stores and restaurants (some with the option of outdoor patios), the question we're posing to our readers is:

What stores or restaurants would you like to see built as part of the redevelopment of the Mall in Columbia?

I like the idea of a CVS because you can't get things like toiletries at the mall. Also, they should get a Pita Pit!!

How about a toy store, hobby shop, and a music shop. We don't need any more clothing and shoe stores.

Since there is already a big toy store in the Mall, (between Nordstrom and Macy's upstairs) I would like to see a hobby store and a music store. A CVS or other drug store was already talked about for the new Warfield shopping area. Ursula Kondo

I'd love to have more of a range of restaurants downtown - we have Cheesecake Factory, PF Chang, and Champs, which I'd place at mid-range, and the mall has plenty of inexpensive food, but I'd love to have some special occasion restaurants like Ruth's Chris or Fogo de Chao - right now we have to go to Baltimore, DC, or Annapolis for those. An art gallery of some sort, near those special occasion restaurants, would be great. Also, a crab and beer place downtown would be wonderful - We are in Maryland after all. :) As for stores, I don't know if we'd have room for something like Arhaus (Tysons), but a furniture/artsy store like that would be great.

I would love to see a Chop't restaurant added. Go there every time I'm in DC.

How about something like World Market (not sure if there's enough room, maybe)? Or, I agree, a music store would be a great addition too!

I'd love to see one of the excellent beer pubs we have in town make a play for a space at the mall and open a new restaurant/ bar there. A place like Frisco Tap House or Victoria Gastro Pub would be a great (and needed) addition to the downtown nightlife.

Jamba Juice would be nice!!

I would love to see a Tilted Kilt! Fantastic Establisment

I would love to see The Container Store. Having said that, I am the only one who thinks it's crazy for GGP to demolish a relatively new building?

Cracker Barrel

California Pizza Kitchen! Whenever in Annapolis or Bethesda, I stop in for one of their great salads. Gordon Biersch would be great if a nice outdoor dining area can be included too. Ideal for before or after movies or shopping. As for stores, would be nice to see Zara and Asos.

crate and barrel, pottery barn, juice bar, brewery/pub, and definitely a Walgreens or CVS, Zoup! (best soup and salad and sandwich place ever!!!!)

An upscale, non chain restaurant would be a great addition. I'd love to see some kind of childrens' or community space. Maybe a splash pad or climbing structure combined w/ outdoor seating/fountain small performance space and surrounding casual restaurants with outdoor seating.

First and foremost, Charming Charlie! Then maybe Anthropologie, Arden B, and P.S. ( by Areopostale). Ditto on the California Pizza kitchen and Pottery Barn.
Jo July 29, 2012 at 05:43 PM
Definitely Urban Outfitters!! I would be there literally every day. I also like the above ideas of a California Pizza Kitchen or a Jamba Juice. none of these are close, so it would be nice to have some around (:

I enjoy going to Columbia Mall as it is close to home and I like the variety of stores there. However, PARKING IS ALWAYS AN ISSUE every weekend night especially (and of course, for holidays) because of the current restaurants and the large movie theater. Just as others have mentioned, I have driven around for a very long time unable to find any parking and finally left -- choosing to eat somewhere else or go to Snowden Square for a movie. How can they add new restaurants and stores withOUT additional parking, especially on that side of the Mall?!? At least consider a large parking garage (3 levels minimum) towards the outer edge of the current lot. If parking is not added, I guarantee that business will be lost. I would be one of very many patron(s) that would no longer go to Columbia Mall for dinner or a movie. As for recommendations for stores/restaurants: seafood/steak restaurant would be populalr, definitely a drug store like CVS, and a book/music store (B&N or BAM or FYE).
