Report: Meeting to Discuss Moving Downtown Post Office Scheduled

The post office could close if can't reach an agreement with Howard Hughes Corp.

The post office in the American City Building in Downtown Columbia is in doubt. A spokesperson for the USPS told the Howard County Times they are looking at other options in the area.

A meeting to discuss other locations for a post office on Nov. 5 at the Columbia Main Post Office, 6801 Oak Hall Lane, at 3 p.m., according to a flyer photo sent to Patch.

John DeWolfe, senior vice president of Howard Hughes, told the Howard County Times that Howard Hughes would like to have a post office in Downtown Columbia, but "are at the mercy of them right now." The USPS lease at the downtown location expires on May 31, 2014, according to the report.

Howard Hughes is the company building the Metropolitan Downtown Columbia apartment and retail building near The Columbia Mall. It's also renovating the new Whole Foods location as well as developing a business and apartment community in the Crescent area around Merriweather Post Pavilion.
