Report: Family Market Closed After Attempting to Power Grocery with Generator

The grocery store also failed to pay rent to Safeway, the building's landlord, and was evicted from the space.

The Family Market grocery store in the Long Reach Village Center was evicted by its landlord after failing to pay rent and was closed in May after the health department shut them down for powering the store with a generator, according to an ExploreHoward.com report.

Family Market was subletting the space from Safeway, but had not paid rent on it since Jan. 2012 and currently owes Safeway $302,038.21 in rent as well as $55,206.85 in other fees, according to the report.

The market opened in February 2012, but was shut down in May by the Howard County Health Department for powering the grocery store with a generator, reported Explore Howard. A Safeway spokesperson told the paper they evicted the market so they could find a new tenant for the space.

Signs posted on the doors of the grocery store read, "We will be closed for the next 2-3 weeks for Renovation & Restocking, we will re-open on or about June 7, 2013."

But on Wednesday, the signs were up and the front doors were covered with brown paper.
