Concept Designs for Merriweather's Crescent Area Released

Howard Hughes put the conceptual renderings on display at an event at Clyde's in May.

Developers recently shared initial drawings of how they hope to develop the crescent area south of Merriweather Post Pavilion.

The photos above came from a reader who attended a Howard Hughes event at Clyde's in May.

The conceptual designs show what look like major additions to the area south and west of Merriweather Post Pavilion, including a number of high rise buildings.

In parts of the crescent area, buildings up to 15 and 20 stories are permitted, according to the Downtown Columbia Plan.

Patch contacted Howard Hughes to elaborate on the conceptual designs, but a spokesperson said the information wouldn't be immediately avaialble.

In February, when Patch asked Howard Hughes Vice President John DeWolf about plans for Merriweather and the crescent he said he wasn't prepared to discuss those areas.

At the February groundbreaking for the development of the Metropolitan Downtown Columbia building near The Mall in Columbia, Dewolf said that Howard Hughes hopes to build a project per year.

He said at the moment they are shooting to finish the Metropolitan by 2014, then focusing on Parcel C—an undeveloped section of land next to the Metropolitan, near Sears at the mall. Finally, they'll turn to Merriweather and the Crescent.

In 2010, the master plan for Downtown Columbia approved the development of up to 5,500 new residential units, 1.25 million square feet of retail, 4.3 million square feet of commercial office space and over 600 hotel rooms.

Based on these renderings, it appears the crescent area will be a major part of reaching those numbers.
