Let the dogs out at CA’s fifth annual Dog Day Afternoon

The Columbia Association (CA) will host its fifth annual Dog Day Afternoon on Saturday, April 16, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hopewell Park in Columbia.

CA invites Columbia canines and their people to an afternoon of contests, treats, activities and lots of tail-wagging fun. This year’s canine  activities will include informational Q&As; demonstrations from pet-related organizations and businesses; fenced-off areas for open play; caricature artists; and fun contests where your dog can show off his or her special talents.

Dog Day Afternoon sponsor, Herb Gordon Subaru, will offer free dog IDs. Dogs may also have their “head shots” taken to be entered into the second annual Columbia’s Cutest Canine Contest. The winner will later be announced on CA’s Facebook Page. This year’s schedule of activities is as follows:

This free event also offers entertainment for the whole canine-loving family, including raffles; face painting; music; and a kids’ arts & crafts station sponsored by Columbia Art Center. “Doug the Food Dude” will offer food for purchase.

Dog Day Afternoon features local businesses and organizations that focus on the health, happiness and well-being of our beloved, furry friends. Confirmed vendors for this year’s event include A&B’s Pampered Pets, LLC; Camp Bow Wow; Canine Companions for Independence; Club Pooche; Columbia Pet Sitters; Dogtopia of Clarksville; Friends of Howard County Pets on Wheels; HoCoDOG, Inc.; Howard County Happy Hounds 4-H Canine Club; Loving Care Pet & House Sitting Services; Mid-Atlantic German Shepard Rescue; Pawz for Health; Petlane; Total Comfort Mobile Pet Grooming; and VCA Columbia Animal Hospital.

Dog Day Afternoon is part of the Columbia Association’s Welcome Initiative to help new and current residents learn more about Columbia’s history and vision and encourage them to become involved in their community.
