Speak Out: Do You Think Thunder Hill Road Needs Speed Humps?

Two committes formed by residents are exploring options to add speed humps north and south of MD-175.

Residents of Thunder Hill Road—a primary thoroughfare connecting Route 108 with MD-175 in Oakland Mills—are interested in putting in speed humps, according to a report by ExploreHoward.com published Friday morning

The report featured a woman whose dog and car were both struck by hit-and-runs in separate incidents. The dog survived, but has a heart murmur and the car was sideswiped, according to the report.

Currently there are now two committees lobbying for speed humps, wrote ExploreHoward.com. One wants to put six humps north of MD-175 between 108, while the other wants three south of MD-175, before the Oakland Mills Village Center, according to the report.

A Howard County speed van spent a total of 1 hour in the 5600 block of Thunder Hill Road, near Oakland Mills High School, and issued no citations in 2012, according to Howard County speed camera data released earlier this year. There is no school zone close enough to the northern portion of the road, so no data from speed vans exists in the 2012 report.

Some facts about the road, according to a study cited in the Explore Howard report:

  • The speed limit is 25 MPH
  • The average speed on the northern portion was 31 mph, about 11,803 vehicles use it daily, the cost to add six humps would be about $33,000
  • The average speed on the southern portion was 36.5 mph, about 2,793 vehicles use it daily, the cost to add three humps would be about $15,000
