Savage Fest, ‘Awesome’ 80’s Gala, Gem Mining and More in Howard County this Weekend

Savage Fest 2013

  • When:  Saturday, June 1, 9 a.m.
  • Description:  Savage is gearing up to host its 26th annual Savage Fest on June 1, 2013.  This community festival features a parade at 9 a.m., followed by live music from local bands, pony rides, petting zoo, rides, and other entertainment.  It also includes over 50 booths featuring crafts, food, and more.

Black Tie & Neon Brights: A Totally Awesome 80s Gala

  • Where:   Howard Community College, 10901 Little Patuxent Pky, Columbia
  • When:  Friday, May 31, 6 p.m.
  • Description:  Gala attendees are invited to wear 80’s inspired attire.  There will be a silent auction that includes original artwork, entertainment, leisure time and sports items.
  • Cost: $150

Relay For Life of Howard County

  • Where:  Long Reach High School, 6101 Old Dobbin Ln, Columbia
  • When:  Friday, May 31, 6:30 p.m.
  • Description:  Relay For Life of Howard County is a life-changing experience where members of the community come together to Celebrate our Cancer Survivors, Remember loved ones lost and Fight Back against the disease.  The night of Relay is a family-friendly community event and everyone is welcome to attend.
  • Cost: Free

St. Matthew Yard Sale and Car Wash

  • Where:  Orthodox Church of St Matthew, 7271 Eden Brook Dr, Columbia
  • When:  Saturday, June 1, 8 a.m.
  • Description:  Yard sale, car wash, and bake sale to benefit the Orthodox Church of St. Matthew's Multi-Cultural Festival. 
  • Cost:  Free

  • Where:  5470 Hesperus Dr, Columbia
  • When:  Saturday, June 1, 9 a.m.
  • Description:  Spring Bazaar and Pit Beef Bonanza.  There will be unique items and general yard sale goodies for purchase.  In addition, there will be concessions and Good to Go Markets pit beef, pit turkey, and hot dogs.
  • Cost:  Free

Luke Spence - Fundraising Recital for the Eastern Music Festival

  • Where:  Marriotts Ridge High School, 12100 Woodford Dr, Marriottsville
  • When:  Friday, May 31, 7 p.m.
  • Description:  Luke Spence is a graduate of Marriotts Ridge High School and is currently in his second year studying classical trumpet performance at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio.  On Friday, May 31st at 7:00 pm Luke will be performing a fundraising recital at Marriotts Ridge High School to help raise the necessary funds for this festival.

The 18th Annual Cosmetic Surgery Symposium

  • Where:  5485 Twin Knolls Rd, Columbia
  • When:  Saturday, June 1, 10 a.m.
  • Description:  Mitchel Kanter, M.D. and William Kanter, MD, featured on TV's educational program HEALTH TODAY, will discuss cosmetic surgery of the face, breast & body contour as well as lasers, Botox & Restylane. Safety, cost and how to select a Plastic Surgeon will also be discussed at this free seminar.

Gem Mining Weekend

  • Where:  Clark's Elioak Farm, 10500 State Route 108, Ellicott City
  • When:  Saturday, June 1, 10 a.m.  
  • Description:  Visitors are invited to experience a hands-on opportunity of gem mining. Participants will purchase a bucket full of enriched ore, and use the water flume to discover gems to take home.
  • Cost: $5

Summer Reading Kickoff

  • Where:  Howard County Library System Charles E. Miller Branch & Historical Center, 9421 Frederick Rd, Ellicott City
  • When:  Saturday, June 1, 10 a.m.
  • Description:  Local book lovers are invited to sign up for a summer reading club and participate in a day of fun including children's stories, face painting, crafts, and activities for children, teens, and adults. Library staff will be on hand to recommend great books for teens and adults.
  • Cost: Free

Bellows Spring 10th Anniversary Year-End Picnic

  • Where:  Bellows Spring Elementary School, 8125 Old Stockbridge Dr, Ellicott City
  • When:  Saturday, June 1, 1 p.m.
  • Description:  Celebration of Bellows Spring Elementary's 10th anniversary and the bittersweet retirement of Principal Jackie Klamerus.  Bring your own picnic lunch or pre-order a boxed lunch for just $7 each from the Honey Baked Ham Company. Boxed lunches (veggie options available) will be delivered to the school for pick up at 1:15 pm. Other food/snack options for sale include the new Chick-Fil-A food truck, Kona Ice, popcorn, and cotton candy. Families can enjoy free and ticketed options: a train ride and monster slide, 7-course inflatable obstacle course, carnival games, bubbles, rockets, and other surprises by Club Scientific, demonstration by Kangaroo Kids Precision Jumprope Team of Howard County, arts and sports activities, raffles, music and much more.
  • Cost: Free to attend / Tickets for inflatables and carnival games are .50 each or 50 tickets for $20. Many activities will be free for all.
