Reader Comment: 'As a mother, I'd want to know and need to know what happened.'

Perspectives from the community.

This week's comment round-up features thoughts on a mother's plight to find details of the shooting death of her son and more fallout from the Long Reach fight.

Dr. Berry has the right to know what happened on the Pennsylvania turnpike on March 6, 2012. If it were my son, I would certainly want to know how a traffic accident could result in such an untimely death. It is no surprise that, until now, media reports appear to legitimize Pennsylvania State Police actions. However, PSP failed to mention to the media that there was no video camera recording of the incident. What other details did they omit? What is most disturbing is that Dr. Berry apparently now has to take official legal action to obtain objective details in a timely manner about the death of her son. No mother….no American citizen should have to go through that with troopers who call themselves “soldiers of the law.”

… As a mother I'd want to know and need to know what happened. The more PSP tries to hide the facts the worse it will be for them. My thoughts and prayers with Dr. Berry, her family and Daryl's friends.

The discussion ranged regarding Long Reach High School after the masked man seen in the viral fight video and turned out to be a 40-year-old Baltimore man.

Coach Pete Hughes, football coach at Long Reach High, attempted to dispel some of the criticism of the school occurring in the comments:

I have been here since the school has opened. I am a teacher and the head football coach. I have always been proud to be here and would not want to be anywhere else in the county. Long Reach like all of the schools each year have a handful of students who seem to get into trouble. I have seen 15 graduating classes come through and you would be surprise by the number of graduates who continue their education in prestigious colleges. We have 1300 students in our school. If you look at the links you included, you will see maybe 10 kids in all of them who were disgusting. Please don't judge our staff, students and administrators by the actions of less than one percent of our student body. I looked on you tube for the first time and found videos like these at other schools. Unfortunately it is the world we live it with modern technology. I invite you to spend a day in our school and you will see like others that this is a very good school. Mr. Burton and our administrative staff are outstanding. I am truly sorry if you had a bad experience here at Long Reach. Coach Pete Hughes
