Howard County is under a winter storm warning Sunday through Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

A winter storm warning means that significant amounts of snow, sleet and freezing rain will fall, impacting travel, the weather service said.

One to three inches of snow and sleet are expected, with one quarter-inch of ice accumulation possible, according to the National Weather Service.

The most ice will accumulate Sunday night, the weather service said, adding that downed tree branches and icy roads were also likely.

The winter storm warning is in effect from 8 a.m. Sunday to 10 a.m. Monday in Howard, northern Baltimore, Montgomery and Carroll counties in addition to parts of Virginia.

Power outages are possible since the mixture of "snow and ice has the potential to coat trees and tree limbs, which may then fall onto power lines..." Carol Dodson, vice president of BGE, said. "Some outages may be extended if hazardous road conditions delay our crews’ ability to travel and begin restoration work."

Snow and sleet will start falling in Howard County Sunday morning, changing to freezing rain in the afternoon, the forecast said. Freezing rain will continue through Sunday evening and turn into regular rain Monday morning.

Temperatures will stay in the upper 20s and low 30s Sunday, according to the forecast.

According to their website (http://www.hcpss.org/), "We will be monitoring road conditions throughout the night and a decision will be made regarding the start of school by 5:30 am." They usually like to wait until the last second to make a decision.
