Fairs, Films, a Triathlon and More in Howard County this Weekend

Looking for something exciting to do this weekend? Check out some of the fun things going on around town.

Where: Columbia Lakefront Stage

When: Friday, Aug. 17, 8 - 10:30 p.m.

Why to go: They're showing the Academy Award winning 2011 silent film The Artist. The movie is about a silent movie superstar who faces the end of his career when he meets a young actress. (It also includes a dancing dog!)

When: Sunday, Aug. 19, start at 7 a.m.

Why to go: Hunderds of female athletes will compete for a $5,000 purse on a triathlon course that includes a 0.62 mile swin, 17.5 mile bike and 3.3 mile run. It's the seventh annual Columbia Iron Girl and the event was named the "Best Women's Event" in the Mid-Atlantic by Competitor Magazine.

Pricing: Free to watch, registration to pariticpate is closed.

Where: Artists' Gallery, 10227 Wincopin Circle, Columbia

When: Saturday, Aug. 18 at 10 a.m.

Why to go: The juried art show will feature works from local artists from Howard County and surrounding counties who have been invited to showcase their work for the gallery's fifth annual show.

When: Saturday, Aug. 18, 12:30 p.m.

Why to go: The healing circle includes exercises to help you let go of negative thoughts. Those there will participate in writing activities, receive Reiki and use acupuncture methods

When: Sunday, Aug. 19, 1 p.m.

Why to go:  Preservation Howard County and Howard County Tourism and Promotion are sponsoring a book signing event to recognize those authors who have written books that help preserve the history of Howard County. Authors of numerous books on Howard County will be on hand to sign and sell their books.

When:  Friday, Aug. 17, 7 p.m.

Why to go:  Blues band Bad Influence will play during the Department of Recreation and Parks' "Concerts in the Park" series. Bring a blanket or lawn chair. There will be free ice cream while supplies last.

When: Saturday, Aug. 18, 11 a.m.

Why to go:  Doors open at 9 a.m. A $200 deposit is required before you can bid and put toward your purchase. (That money is refunded if you do not take the bid.)

When: Sunday, Aug. 19, All day

Why to go:  Check out the band We The Empire while helping raise money for cancer research.

Why to go:  BINGO is held every Friday at the Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department.

Where: 6540 Washington Blvd, Elkridge

When: Saturday, Aug. 18, 10:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.

Why to go:  This program is for infants to age 23 months. It features activities, stories and music. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Each session runs from 20 to 30 minutes.
