Report: HoCo Home to Nine of Top 10 Wealthiest Zip Codes in Baltimore Area

Dayton tops a list by the Baltimore Business Journal, but census results show Clarksville as having the highest median household income.

The Baltimore Business Journal released a report this month on the top 50 wealthiest zip codes in the Baltimore area and nine of the top 10 are in Howard County. The report uses data from Esri, a California-based geographic mapping and data company, according to BBJ.

The article listed the wealthiest zip codes in this order:

1. Dayton - 21036 
2. West Friendship - 21794 
3. Glenelg - 21737
4. Cooksville - 21723
5. Fulton - 20759
6. Glenwood - 21738
7. Clarksville - 21029
8. Highland - 20777
9. Phoenix - 21131 - Baltimore County (Only non-Howard County community in top 10)
10. Ellicott City - 21042

However, comparing the rankings to the median household income found in census data, gathered from the averages of 2007 to 2011 American Community surveys, the results are different:

1. Clarksville - 21029 - $181,204
2. Highland - $164,348 
3. West Friendship - 21794 - $163,906
4. Fulton - 20759 - $162,721
5. Glenwood - 21738 - $160,912
6. Dayton - 21036 - $157,083
7. Glenelg - 21737 - $155,833
8. Ellicott City - 21042 - $136,795
9. Phoenix - 21131 - $115,833 - Baltimore County
10. Cooksville - 21723 - $99,883

The Baltimore Business Journal reports it examined median household income and the following factors to determine its ranking: Average net worth, per capital income, disposable income, home values, population counts and household sizes.
