Baltimore is cleaning up its harbor, and gaining a wave of followers in the process.

The city's revolutionary water wheel installed this spring has picked up more than 85 tons of trash since its May installation, according to WJZ.

It's also picked up viewers, as the world watches how the new device works.

A YouTube video showing what happens to trash in Baltimore City after a big rain has netted more than 1 million views. As of July 19, it's been seen 1,009,075 times.

How does it work? Powered by sunlight and water, the wheel rakes in trash using booms placed in the harbor. It's capable of picking up 50,000 pounds of trash a day.

After collecting refuse, the water wheel ferries trash up to a conveyor belt, which transfers it to a dumpster. The dumpster reportedly took just hours to fill on the heels of a storm in May.

Have you seen the water wheel in Baltimore City? It's located between Pier 5 and Pier 6 in Baltimore's Inner Harbor.
