Community Corner

Please consider helping me in my Boston Marathon Quest

Hi everyone, I would like to ask you to consider supporting my goal to run the Boston Marathon this year as part of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center's charity team to benefit deserving kids from an underserved community who struggle with overweight/obesity. To give a bit more background about myself, I grew up in Ellicott City, MD (near Old Ellicott City) and am currently a fourth year medical student in Boston. My sister and I have had a goal to both qualify for and run the Boston Marathon together before I graduate from medical school; although we were able to accomplish the former, because of the increased interest in the marathon this past year, the qualification was made more stringent and I was cut by 23 seconds (though she was still able to qualify). As a member of the medical community and now transplant to Boston, the events of last April hit at multiple levels; I am determined to still run with her and gladly found an opportunity to run in support of a cause instead.
The BI's Healthy Champions Program serves primarily low-income kids ages 7-14 who struggle with overweight/obesity in one Boston community. The program is multifactorial, as the kids meet with both a nutritionist and fitness coach in order to learn about healthy eating and exercise, as well as each cultivate their own plot in the community garden every summer.  After having observed a weight management clinic for children of lower-income families as a medical student, I have seen the barriers many kids and their parents experience to access to both healthy foods and affordable (and safe) exercise opportunities. Thus, I am excited to have the opportunity to raise money in order to support the Healthy Champions program, and by extension, kids and their parents like my patients.
I am asking you to consider also helping these kids, as well as helping me to complete my goal of running with my sister. We want to show that no one can deter us. #BostonStrong.
