Medical Assistant - Office Assistant for Busy Columbia Gastroenterology Office

Job Description

Duties include clinical and administrative responsibilities to support the physicians and nurse practitioners in providing patient care.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Escorts patients to and from exam rooms, physician offices, and treatment room as appropriate.

2. Records patient data prior to each physician visit, including but not limited to, vital signs, height, weight, allergies, and medication changes.

3. Obtains all necessary patient records as required by physician and verifies presence of consent prior to treatment or procedures.

4. Prepares and stocks exam/treatment rooms and orders supplies as needed.

5. Assists physicians with exams and procedures as requested.

6. Assists with delegated patient education activities including but not limited to distributing education literature, etc.

7. Obtains blood specimens from peripheral sites as needed and in accordance with OSHA and universal precautions.

8. Maintains all exam/treatment room disinfection protocols.

9. Processes instruments and equipment as needed.

10. Answers patient telephone calls for referral to physician or nurse/pharmacist.

11. Phones in prescriptions and makes other patient calls as directed by physicians and RN.

12. Schedules patient tests, procedures and hospital admissions and schedules appointments to follow-up on test results, as applicable.

13. Arranges for pre-authorizations and pre-certifications as needed. Informs physician of patient reschedules and no shows.

14. Performs other administrative duties, i.e. typing, filing faxing, reception, etc, as requested by supervisor, physician or office manager.

15. Displays excellent verbal and written communication skills.

16. Displays excellent computer skills

17. Become proficient with office EMR system.

18. Update patient information, scan insurance card/picture ID

19. Be prepared to open the office at the beginning of the day.

20. Be prepared to stagger your schedule with the team to provide continuous support during the patient schedule.

21. Constantly practice and promote good patient relations.

22. Cross-training with Endoscopy Center.

Requirements

Additional Requirements:

College degree preferred

Minimum 3 years experience working in the medical field

Experience using medical software and patient scheduling systems preferred, Medical Mastermind and gMed.

Familiarity with automated office systems

Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills

Excellent patient services skills

Minimum 3 years experience working in the medical field
