Local Nonprofit Offers Program for Family Caregivers

Bigger Conversations invites family caregivers (those tending a sick or frail loved one) to participate in a six-week wellness program starting March 18th, 6:30-8:30pm. No fee.

Our program focuses on stress reduction and wellness. The healing practices we teach caregivers generate self-awareness and self-renewal; these practices can be used immediately in daily life.  In each session, we do auricular (ear only) acupuncture which relaxes the body, quiets the mind and calms emotions. With relaxed awareness, participants are better able to engage in the weekly “check in”, give their attention to the topics presented and learn the healing practices. The topic content and the healing practices are the building blocks that each caregiver uses to create a personal self-care plan.

Note: Some feedback from caregiver participants in our 2012-13 Pilot Program (supported by the Community Foundation of Howard County): 90% of participants reported making changes in self-care and health habits; most reported that they were better able to reduce and/or manage their stress; all reported an increased awareness of the importance of self-care; 75% of the participants indicated experiencing a lessened sense of isolation and increased compassion toward the loved one they tend.
