Howard Hospital Foundation Awards Rose Mayr Nursing Scholarship

Howard Hospital Foundation (HHF), which provides philanthropic support to Howard County General Hospital, awarded the first Rose Mayr Nursing Scholarship to Susan Rose, a current student in Howard Community College’s nursing program.

Mark and Sharon Mayr created the scholarship through HHF in honor of their daughter Rose Mayr who was killed after a train derailment in downtown Ellicott City in August 2012. HHF administers the scholarship with the Howard Community College Educational Foundation.

“I think it is amazing the Mayrs got together with the Howard Hospital Foundation and HCC to do something so selfless. I hope I can make them proud and do my best in school,” Susan said. “I am so honored to be the one to receive the scholarship. I really want to do well to represent the scholarship’s name.”

Susan said she chose nursing because she wants to help people. In addition to attending nursing school full time with plans to graduate in 2015, Susan does full-time accounting work for small businesses. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business from Mount St. Mary’s University.

The scholarship awards $1,500 per semester to each recipient for up to four consecutive semesters. One new scholarship recipient in Howard Community College’s nursing program will be selected each academic year.
