For the first time in MML history, in lieu of presenting its highest service award to a member or members of the Maryland General Assembly, the League will recognize the O’Malley-Brown Administration with its Distinguished Service Award. Governor Martin O’Malley and Lt. Governor Anthony Brown will be honored for their understanding of the plight of municipal governments, following four years of significant reductions in Highway User Revenues, with their strong support for the inclusion of a one-time infusion of municipal Highway User Revenues in the Fiscal Year 2014 State budget.

This award honors a current or former elected or appointed official who has demonstrated outstanding service to Maryland municipal government. Floyd S. “Pete” Elliott, former City of Cumberland council member will be honored with this distinction, for his role as an exceptional civil servant and neighborhood leader. For all 20 years of his time in elected office, Elliott served as Cumberland’s primary MML representative and was a member of MML’s Board of Directors.

MML’s 2013 Achievement Awards, for Creating a Tourism Niche

The 2013 MML Achievement Awards theme was “Creating Your Tourism Niche.” These awards honor cities and towns that have developed tourism initiatives that showcase their municipality’s assets and have successfully drawn visitors. Frederick, Md., the Large City Winner (10,000+ population) will receive an Achievement Award for its History Bicycle Loop project, which created a tour around the City of Frederick and focused on the city’s historic sites. Sykesville, Md. the Medium Town Winner (3,000-10,000 population), will receive an award for its Ghost & Legends Tours, which takes participants from throughout/across Maryland and neighboring states on tours that focus on Sykesville’s ghost stories.

The MML Annual Convention is the largest yearly gathering of hundreds of municipal officials including mayors, council members and aldermen, city and town managers and other municipal staff, as well as state elected officials and business leaders. The goal of the event is to bring together interested parties to share and learn about municipal issues and improve the operation of Maryland’s local cities and towns. Along with the presentation of MML awards, the convention features numerous networking and learning opportunities for city and town officials.

This year’s convention theme, Cherish the Past – Plan the Future, recognizes the rich history of Maryland’s cities and towns, along with the need for municipal leaders to be visionaries who look ahead to changing demographics and conditions and proactively plan a strong future for their cities and towns.
