On October 7, 2010, I lost a good childhood friend of mine from Frederick, MD, Rhianna Weber.  I remember sitting at my work desk when I learned the news.  I was shaking.  I was literally in shock.  She had taken her own life.  Later, I would learn she had dealt with years of depression, and had put a final goodbye message on Facebook.  The funeral was one of the hardest ones I've ever attended.  A beautiful girl gone at just 34.

Suicide is not easy to deal with.  I know many people who have experienced a needless loss to it.  I know friends who are tormented with the thoughts of it often.  Depression is a serious disease.  But, most often, it is preventable.  There are signs.  And, there are non-profits whose goal is to offer assistance to those troubled to get on the right path again.

The beauty salon that I frequent in Columbia, MD is coming up on nearly 10 years of its annual charity event, "LOOKS for Life" to celebrate the life of Patrick Jameson, whose life ended all too early in 2002.  LOOKS for Life is a fundraiser for the Grassroots for Suicide Prevention non-profit, and was a concept derived by Patrick's mother and LOOKS Salon & Spa owner, Marilyn Petersen.  Through this annual fundraiser, Marilyn has been able to celebrate Patrick's life and raise money and awareness for suicide prevention.  And, I always like when I hear people are using tragic situations to "do good."  The local Grassroots for Suicide Prevention organization operates both a mobile crisis unit, a 24-hour hotline, and a walk-in counseling program...it has a direct impact in our community.

On September 23rd, from 10 am to 2 pm, at the LOOKS Salon & Spa on Oak Hall Lane in the Owen Brown Village of Columbia (near the Columbia Post Office), the staff will be working hard and offering traditional salon and spa services at discounted prices: $40 haircut and styles (one-price-fits-all women's, men's, and children's cuts), $25 blow-drys, $15 manicures, $12 eyebrow waxes, and $25 half-hour massages.  There will be refreshments and a DJ.  And, a silent auction.  ALL proceeds will be donated.

Exactly two months away, but time to put it on the calendar.  And, start thinking if there's anyway that your local business can help out with this event.  This year, LOOKS is offering the opportunity for local businesses to "sponsor" a station (advertise while supporting this great cause with your business logo, brochures, business cards, samples, etc. at one of 40 stylist stations throughout the salon), starting at $250 (and tax deductible too), or offering items to the silent auction (on display for two weeks proceeding the event) and 50/50 raffle.  The sponsorship advertising will be displayed at a stylist station from September 9 through September 23.  Hundreds of salon patrons will see your messaging, it's low-cost, and you'll be helping this great cause.  You can contact LOOKS at 410-381-9030 or info@looksllc.com to inquire about these available opportunities.

Have you lost a friend or family member to suicide?  Do you have a loved one that suffers from the deepest of depressions?  Or, do you just like helping the local community?  September 23rd is your time to get out and help out a good cause.  You just never know whose life you might save.  We cannot bring back Patrick, Rhianna, or the thousands of others, but we can help bring back some joy into the world.  In in the struggling economy, you can help a good-cause charity that is really in need.  Even if you don't need to be pampered, you are still more than welcome to swing by and check out the 50/50 raffle and silent auction.

Can't make Looks for Life on September 23rd?  Sonoma's of the Owen Brown Village Center is hosting a fundraiser night at the bar on Thursday, September 20th.  There will be a nominal cover charge donation, a DJ, bar specials, and 50/50 raffle tickets available.

No RSVP necessary for either event, just show up.  ALL are welcome!  See you there!
