Incumbents Janet Siddiqui and Ellen Flynn Giles will return to the Howard County Board of Education next year Joining the board will be Ann De Lacy, a Columbia resident, retired schoolteacher and former president of the Howard County Education Association. At midnight, with 111 of 111 precincts reporting, Siddiqui lead the group with with 22.02 percent of the votes. De Lacy came in second with 16.64 and Giles with 16.43. In a close race, challengers Bob Ballinger, David Gertler and Jackie Scott were all within just over one percent of each other with 15.35, 14.95 and 14.23 percent, respectively. President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. Associated Press called for incumbent Ben Cardin to win re-election minutes after the polls closed in Maryland.
Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin won re-election to the U.S. Senate, defeating Republican Dan Bongino and independent Rob Sobhani. Cardin received 53 percent of the vote, while Bongino had 28 percent and Sobhani had 17 percent just before midnight on Tuesday. Cardin celebrated his re-election with other prominent Democrats at a lounge in M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. In his victory speech, Cardin praised GOP candidate Bongino for running a clean campaign, while saying Sobhani did not. Sobhani, who had previously run as a Republican, reportedly spent more than $4 million to run as an independent and was criticized recently for his last-minute robocalls to potential voters. “I gained a great deal of respect for Dan Bongino,” Cardin said. In an unofficial tally reported on the Maryland Board of Elections website, U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings has taken more than 80 percent of votes calculated so far, including early voters and a portion of ballots cast Tuesday. Cummings, D-Baltimore, the ranking member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, defeated Frank Mirabile Jr. in a rematch of their 2010 race in the 7th District. Barack Obama won Maryland’s 10 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race three out of five times. Election 2012 officials provide voter turnout numbers since 4 p.m. in Howard County.
By 4 p.m. Tuesday nearly 78,000 Howard County voters had cast a ballot, according to the Howard County Board of Elections, and that was without numbers from several precincts that hadn’t yet reported their totals. With four hours to go, about 42 percent of registered voters had cast a ballot in Tuesday’s General Election in Howard County. First update: 10:09 a.m. - Wilde Lake High School - Columbia The line at Wilde Lake High School at about 9:30 a.m. was approximately 20 people long. Chief Election Judge Denise Wright said the polling place had been very busy since 7 a.m. Have photos from Election Day? Post them by clicking on the green button by the photo gallery. It doesn't sound like anything was said against DeLacy, just the idea of shuffling kids based on income. I actually like the idea of basic education principles being brought back to the classroom.
