The Howard County Bucket List

Howard County 'Bucket List' – Chick N' Friends

Chick N' Friends is a draw in Columbia. No utensils needed.

Fried chicken is a staple of classic American cuisine, and a local couple has been perfecting its homestyle goodness in Columbia for years. Chick-N-Friends at the Long Reach Shopping Center boasts a menu of fried chicken, fish, greens, yams, corn muffins and more. With made-to-order items, this chicken joint is a must for chicken lovers and regular picnic-goers. Rhodney Lloyd, who co-owns the restaurant along with his wife, Cassandra, says what sets his business apart from the fast food establishments like KFC and Popeye's is the freshness of the chicken and the quality of the ingredients, which guarantee a "homestyle" taste. "We don't batch cook [dozens] of pieces and have it sitting under the lamps," Lloyd told Patch. "We're trying to do…

What sets this establishment apart from other chicken chain eateries is the lack of size in their sides. I was really shocked when I saw the size of this "snack" size they called a side. It wasn't even enough to feed one person. Won't be going back! :(   more ›

Howard County Transportation Leader: Connectivity to Wegmans Overlooked

John Powell, new administrator for the Office of Transportation, spoke of the need to prioritize transit during a meeting with Howard County nonprofits.

When Wegmans opens in Columbia next month, the nearest bus stop will be on Stanford Boulevard at Magaw Road—which is not close enough, according to John Powell Jr., administrator of Howard County's newly created Office of Transportation. “Right now the bus stop for Wegmans is not at Wegmans," Powell said at the May 16 meeting of the Association of Community Services. "There wasn't somebody like an administrator from an Office of Transportation that was at the table during the planning process,” said Powell. "Transportation needs to be at the table." The Wegmans bus stop was symptomatic of a larger issue, namely lack of consideration given to transportation in Howard County, said Powell, who started his position April 23. Moving forward, …

This is one of the richest counties in the nation. We are a suburban community that owns cars. Why must the county government engage in this sort of stupidity?   more ›

Early Champions of Wine in the Woods Confronted Rain, Opposition

30,000 people are expected to attend the 20th anniversary of the festival in Columbia this weekend.

Paul Farragut was serving as a Howard County Council member back in 1990 when he first pitched the idea to invite Maryland wineries to showcase their wines in Howard County. He said he had seen the success of the Maryland Wine Festival in Caroll County and believed it could be emulated. “It came as a simple suggestion when it came to the Council,” Farragut said about Howard County’s premier festival—Wine in the Woods, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this weekend. “I’m not even sure I suggested Symphony Woods,” said Farragut in an interview this week about the origins of Wine in the Woods. “I was thinking of two areas at the time; Symphony Woods and the Howard County Fairgrounds.” He took the idea to the County Executive at the …

If you are on a limited income, Polly, then a condo is NOT your best choice because you have to be vigilant that your condo board sets aside an adequate amount for long-term maintenance & replacement of major systems, roofing, HVAC, grounds, interior spaces, etc. And then there is the problem of fellow owners who have destructive "guests" who visit & trash the property & its amenities. Guess who …   more ›

Legislature Approves Tax Hike, Pension Shift

Governor calls budget package "good for all Marylanders." Republicans say burden to local governments may force county governments to increase taxes.

The Maryland House of Delegates gave final approval Wednesday to a package of three bills that increases taxes on some state residents, shifts part of teacher pensions to local governments and undoes the so-called "doomsday budget." The votes Wednesday afternoon capped the three-day special session called by Gov. Martin O'Malley in order to override more than $500 million in cuts made in a budget passed in early April. The Senate approved the same three bills Tuesday. As part of the package, legislators approved by a vote of 86-51 what amounts to a 50-50 split of teacher pension costs with local governments. The split will be phased in over the next four years beginning July 1 with the new budget year. That bill also includes a doubling of…

Columbia Man to Run Sushi Restaurant in Elkridge

The venue that was formerly Hokkaido has changed ownership and ambience.

Months after Hokkaido opened on Route 1, it has changed owners and image.. Sushi Q Bar and Grill came online at the end of April, according to Daniel Kim of Columbia, who bought the business. He plans to apply for a liquor license, a process he said could take two to three months, and something he hopes will help attract UMBC students and add another nighttime option for the Elkridge community. "We'd like to be here if you're a student or if you live in the community and you want to have a beer and something to eat," said Kim, who told Patch the kitchen would close at 11 p.m. but the sushi bar would remain open until 2 a.m., if and when the liquor license goes through. Howard County's liquor licensing division told Patch it has not …
