Attorney for Wilde Lake Teen Responds to Rape Allegations

Attorney says evidence will show teen's innocence.

The attorney representing DeShawn Jones, the 17-year-old accused of raping a 14-year-old girl inside Wilde Lake High School earlier this month, said on Monday there is evidence that may prove his client's innocence.

"Mr. Jones denies the allegations brought against him," said attorney Adam Frank in a statement released Monday. "He and his family would ask that you please refrain from any judgment until all of the facts are brought out during trial. The public must remember that there are two sides to every story and there will be evidence that will shed light on Mr. Jones's innocence."

Jones, of Columbia, was arrested on Feb. 5 after a parent of the female student called police and reported the alleged rape. Jones is charged as an adult with second-degree rape and is currently being held on $500,000 bond.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled March 8 at 1:15 p.m., according to court records.

Police reported that the alleged rape occurred in a choir room around lunch time at the school on Monday, Feb. 4, according to court documents. Police stated the girl told them Jones led her into an unoccupied practice room inside the choir room, blocked the door and forced her to have sex with him.

After the encounter, she told two friends of the incident while still at the school and later that night, told a parent, according to court documents.

Jones admitted to police that sexual contact occurred in the practice room, according to the documents.

That comment is the very definition of a rush to judgment. Why don't we wait for the court to do its job?

I suggest that Patch revisit its policy about publishing the names of minors. If he's innocent, you have seriously screwed with this kid's life. I don't care that he's charged as an "adult". At this point he is a 17 year old who hasn't been convicted of anything, so be responsible.

I agree; if innocent he's still ruined. I think the community was trying to 'paint a picture' both by publishing his name, and the fact that he recently moved to Columbia from Baltimore County which was irrelevant to this case.

Totally agree. This kid has had his entire reputation ruined BEFORE he has been convicted of a crime. And there are story after story after story of women who cry rape when none occured, to simply get back at a guy who has rebuffed their affections. We are seeing more and more of that lately. If he is guilty, throw the book at him, but until then when is he not given the same protection as his accuser!

Being charged as an adult means his name is already released via public records pertaining to the case although I agree with your sentiment that internet articles will remain connected to a person's identity long after a verdict has been decided.

Thank you Althea and H.R. for saying that. Those were my exact thoughts as I read this and the first article. I hope the truth will come out for a change.

Woodbine5, I totally agree. I believe there is a vast disconnect between the actual number of rapes that occur, and the number that some of these "grrrrrrl power" delusional femisnists believe occur. Rape is an extremely serious crime, but thankfully it is pretty rare. We don't have enough facts to draw any conclusions here. Patch should not be ruining lives in the process of their reporting.

First of all, it's our policy to report the names of suspects charged as adults with serious felonies. Almost every other news organization follows a similar policy. Secondly, I reached out to the family the day after the incident was reported to ask for comment. They were waiting to get an attorney. When I saw the family had hired an attorney, I called him. About an hour or two after my call, he sent me this statement. I understand this is a sensitive case, but don't get angry at us. We were the first to report Jones's attorney's claim that his client may be innocent. I would at least say we're trying to be fair as we cover this story.

I posted earlier on a different thread of this same topic. Both teens knew and understood the RIGHT from WRONG/YES and NO factors. I truly believe they are now both at fault. The young lady waited several hours to tell her mother, but dished about it to her friends for a few hours before being encouraged to tell Mr. LeMon, the WLHS principal. She chose to meet this boy in that area. She could have said, "NO" but went to where he asked her to meet with him anyway. I am happy that he has a lawyer and admitted that he did have sexual contact/relations with this girl. If he is innocent of rape, he will carry on his shoulders this situation for the rest of his adult life after the dust settles, as the young lady happily goes about looking for another 15 minutes of drama to occupy the hours she spends in or out of school during the day.

Even if found not guilty his name is ruined. Employers don't care to know the facts, they see a serious felony & its suddenly "sorry sir, I don't think u are fit for our establishment ". I feel bad for both "victims ". If she's found to have lied, I hope daddy has deep pockets

That girl showed extremely poor judgment in any case. I don't like the practice of declaring minors as 'adults' whenever it suits the prosecutor or the courts. Messing around with definitions like that only leads to an erosion of rights. However, I frankly think we need corporal punishment as they do in Singapore. In this case, both minors and their parents/guardians should take a few whacks from a bamboo cane live on the internet. I know that seems extreme but it's better than filling jails and prolonged court cases.

Justin, an employer would only see a felony if he is convicted of it. As for all of you who are saying the girl wanted it or she shouldn't have met him......why do you feel it is okay to blame the possible victim and not the possible suspect? Get a grip. As for HR you yet again show yourself a fool. Rape doesn't happen as much as reported? Really? How would you know this? I wonder if you have ever been afraid to walk in a place after dark simply because you are a woman. Even taking a walk in a park by yourself. Don't teach your daughters to fear the night, teach your sons to be better men! Stop violence against women.

I think rather that rape happens more often than what gets reported. But this culture is really loaded with mixed messages when it come to females and 'sexiness'. I don't have the answers, but sometimes the things I see in the USA make me sympathize with conservative religious people who want to cover up and/or hide away females.

actually, that is untrue. Any employer that simply Google's this boy's name would be able to see the allegations against him. And the key word in your statement is exactly why this thread continues....."possible" The boy has not been convicted of anything yet he is already suffering the consequences attached to guilt (shame, public knowledge) without any trial. His right to be innocent until proven guilty has been taken away from him.

Janet, its not normally the girls who walk in the park who are raped. It's the girls with headphones on, like idiots, who are being raped because they are an easy target to catch off gaurd

I agree with comments about discression. We are talking about a very sensitive subject about a very sensitive case. These are two teens who are going through emotional trama and it is up to the adults to be there for them. No one was in the room except for those two and there is two sides to every story and then there is the truth. Let the evidence and the court system be the judge. Especially when lives are are stake. This is a very dear case to our family and we respect all opinions but its not up to anyone to raise a premature verdict.

I can't believe you people! Of course this girl was stupid for meeting with this guy alone! SHE IS 14 YEARS OLD! that's why you can't make legally binding decisions at that age....because we are still naive! But at any age the decision to meet with a man does not hold you responsible for you're RAPE! Yes...I am sure that they are both aware of the right/wrong factors...then in that case(if the young man actually assaulted this young lady) he would be the "one person"responsible because he KNEW what he was about to do to that girl was wrong! And FYI there are many rapes that occur that go unreported or take time before the the individual assulted comes forward due to the physchological impact; the shame the victim has in feeling like they are responsible for their demise, and the embarrassment in being paraded around before the public and even possibly being not believed! I bet half of you would be crying a different story if this happened to you our your child!
